Preparedness Month Essay Competition |

Johnson County Emergency Management is pleased to announce the first ever National Preparedness Month Essay Competition. This competition will coincide with Statewide efforts throughout the month of September in association with National Preparedness Month. This competition strives to stimulate original thought about emergency management and preparedness issues in Johnson County, Kansas. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE The mission of Johnson County Emergency Management is to assure the coordination of the activities of County government, State and Federal entities, citizens, businesses, adjacent jurisdictions, and other disaster partners, to prepare for, respond to, recover from and mitigate major emergencies and disasters within Johnson County. This can only be done in partnership with local citizens who understand and engage in the process of preparing for Johnson County to become a Community Prepared! ESSAY QUESTION “Why is Emergency Preparedness important to Johnson County?” SUBMISSION GUIDELINES The response to the question may be general or focused on a specific aspect (political, social, economic, etc.). Who May Enter?: The competition is open to everyone with an interest in emergency management and preparedness who lives in Johnson County and who will be a student (grades 6-12) in a Johnson County school starting August 1, 2009. Competition Guidelines: The essay should be no more than five pages, double-spaced, in twelve point type and in MS-Word or PDF format. All submissions should be sent via email to npm@jocogov.org by close of business on September 15, 2009. Notification: Award winners & and their sponsors will be notified in writing by September 21, 2009. Criteria: Essays will be evaluated on relevance to the question, innovation of the idea(s), strength of the argument, and quality of the writing. Essays will also be considered in two classifications; middle school & high school. Award(s): Grand Prize: Garmin GPS Unit, Emergency Supply Kit, NOAA All-Hazard Weather Radio, and a tour of the Johnson County Emergency Operations Center (EOC). High School Classification: Winner: Emergency Supply Kit, NOAA All-Hazard Weather Radio, Extreme Weather DVD Honorable Mention: NOAA All-Hazard Weather Radio Middle School Classification: Winner: Emergency Supply Kit, NOAA All-Hazard Weather Radio, Extreme Weather DVD Honorable Mention: NOAA All-Hazard Weather Radio |
